Does my video get uploaded to a server?
For the quality presets (Recommended / Smaller / Smallest in H.264), no — the compression runs entirely in your browser on your own device, so the file never leaves it. Only a target file size, the H.265 codec, or a video too large for in-browser processing fall back to our server, where it's compressed and deleted right after.
Does compressing a video lose quality?
The 'Recommended' preset uses constant-quality encoding (the same approach as HandBrake's RF slider), which targets the visual quality of your source and lets the file size fall out — most people can't tell the compressed copy from the original. Choose 'Smaller' or 'Smallest' to trade a little quality for a much smaller file.
How do I compress a video to a specific size (like for email or Discord)?
Pick 'Target a file size' and enter the size in MB. This runs on our server with two-pass encoding to land just under your target, so it fits attachment and upload limits.
Is there a file size or length limit?
In-browser compression works best on shorter clips; very large videos automatically use our server, which is capped at 200 MB and about 3 minutes so it stays fast. For larger or longer files, use a desktop tool or reach out about a Pro plan.
What's the difference between H.264 and H.265?
H.264 plays everywhere and is the safe default. H.265 (HEVC) makes noticeably smaller files at the same quality, but a few older devices and browsers can't play it — pick it when small size matters more than universal playback.
